Changes announced for US J-1 Summer Work and Travel Program

The US State Department has announced significant changes to the J-1 Summer Work and Travel Program following an investigation that found widespread abuses in the program.

The J-1 Summer Work and Travel Program is a cultural-exchange program that brings more than 100,000 foreign college students to the US each year. It allows foreign college students to spend up to four months living and working in the US.

While some of the rules are effective immediately, others won’t take effect until November 2012, including one of the most significant changes, which would prohibit visa-holders from working in “goods-producing” industries, such as manufacturing, construction and agriculture.

Australian tourism industry wants easier Australian visa procedures

Following US President Barack Obama’s announcement to streamline the processing of US visa applications, the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) implored Australian immigration to take similar action.

Last week, President Obama signed an executive order stating the US State Department would increase US visas issued to China and Brazil by 40 percent this year.

ATEC chief Felicia Mariani noted that the changes in the US clearly addressed the significance of the tourism industry to the US economy by making it easier to obtain US visit visas. Australia should also make changes that will benefit their tourism sector.

American Green Card Lottery

The United States government runs a diversity program called the Diversity Lottery (DV) Program, that enable 50,000 people from all over the globe to come and settle in the United States. Like any other citizen of the country. They would be allowed to work earn and have equal rights there by law, and the best part is that it’s permanent and not time bound.

There are a couple of eligibility criteria for the program. These primarily circles around the education and previous work experience of the individual. About Education – The applicants would be required to have completed 12 years of education primary and secondary combined.
